It's hard to think that it's already six months since Silver-Blonde Lizzie founded this community. It seems like yesterday, but it also seems like a long time ago. It's been a time of learning for the team so we thought it was time for an update - about various things.

We are growing (up)

At six months, infants are beginning to come into their own, but still have a lo-o-ong way to go. So it is for us. The infographic below shows how many people subscribe to the community and how many are active in our space.

It also shows how many subscribers have generously delegated to the community account - @hive-106316. We appreciate this - more than you know - and we'll come back to why this is so important in a bit.

Who are Silver Bloggers?

When the community was conceived, the thought was that the community be restricted to folks over forty, and whose hair is beginning to turn silver. In other words, and yes, I'm going to say it: the older Hivean. The so-called silver surfer, mums, dads, grannies and grandpas, aunts, uncles, and more to the point, the greats (aunts, uncles, and yes, grannies and grandpas).

Age is just a number: why we dropped the age restriction

It's true that age is just a number. I speak for myself (Silver Flower) - not far from the big six-oh - and feeling not a day over 27. Oh, and I was a step granny at 39(!)... We soon discovered that there were younger folk who wanted to join the community - and it was hard to actually confirm that they were, in fact, whippersnappers!

But that's not all

It's kinda hard to ask the person behind each account if they might have danced to -

And...what was so special about Bette Davis's eyes? Or were they actually born when it was a hit...?

It has to come down to the post fit.

I'm glad you asked: they fit because they reflect the preferred topics and the topics for community initiatives like the recent Blog of the Week.

A reminder of the preferred community topics and "concerns"

You will find the community description here, but here's a reminder, anyway:

A community for retired and aspirant retiree bloggers, seasoned and wannabe crypto hodlers.

The Silver Bloggers’ community brings together young-at-heart kindred spirits and younger 'old souls'. The golden threads, in addition to a love of blogging and photography, are –

• a keenness to learn more about blockchain and crypto – we’re not digital natives – most of us were born before the PC was imagined; we ask “stoopid” questions

• a compulsion to share our life experiences for storage on the blockchain for our children and children’s children

• musings and memories of lives lived – the happy and the sad, the long and the short

• planning for life beyond formal work – from leisure and travel to second (or third…) careers, hobbies that can supplement pensions and just what keeps “un” working people busy

From time to time, we will run challenges. To suggest and/or run a challenge, please tag one of the administrators or moderators with your idea.

We have emboldened some of the points to reinforce the fact that most of us (unless we regularly have help) have silver running through our gold, brown or black hair.

What will happen to posts that don't fit?

There are a number of communities on the blockchain that have few subject or content restrictions and we encourage folk to post there and in other niche communities, too. We would like to steer conversation and engagement in this community towards the excitements (and challenges) of the third or fourth chapters of our lives. That's not to say that we don't approve of youthful frivolity (we've all been guilty of that - some of us still are!), but posts that evidently don't fit, will be muted.

And

If you feel that you/or your post has been unfairly muted, please tag one of the admins and ask why, and also explain why you think it fits. We're very happy to listen and learn. And it's not irreversible.

Back to the housekeeping

Returning to the delegations: in her post announcing the establishment of this community account, @lizelle said that all rewards would go to the account. It is slowly growing and the intention is to continue to grow it so that it can -

• support regular contributors to the community through curation (votes on posts and comments)
• build a nest-egg of prizes for deserving contributions to the community challenges and contests.

Delegations enable the team to do more with less while the account is growing. All rewards other than those that go to the team who spend time on writing posts(set to 20% of the posts they author), are powered up to build the account.

If you can't or would rather not delegate, we encourage you, when you post in the community, to set the account as a 5% beneficiary. Thank you in advance!

Growing pains and sharing the load

Because of the way the community is growing and because of some of the RL challenges some of the team are facing, some have had to take a step back. This means that we're looking for folk who would like to help share the load. If you'd like to lend a hand, please pop in to our new Discord Channel? Tag either Silver-Blonde Lizzie or Silver Flower. Bear with us - because of RL and time zone issues - we may not get back to you immediately, but we will, eventually!
