There are movies that when they start seem to go the way of giving us something really interesting, but then unexpectedly deflate and end up being super tedious and disappointing, well that's what Widows is all about.

Widows is a film that tells us the story behind, or rather the story of what happens to the women of a group of criminals when they were killed while escaping from the police, a premise that sounds very attractive because each woman will have to face really intense situations that are generated as a consequence of the actions of their husbands.

The plot.

The film begins in a great way with the scene of a great robbery full of action and adrenaline, then shows us dramatic and conflictive scenes of the death and funeral of the criminals, a really good start that catch our attention in seconds but...little by little everything goes down.

For me the film inexplicably took a path that ruined it in a certain way, because it wasted resources that could have taken advantage of and that could have made it great. Almost in the middle of the story the film falls into a tedious and dull rhythm going through a more dramatic path that I don't enjoy at all because it shows that it was forced. At one point in the film, alternative plots begin to appear that move away from the most interesting part of the film, the inner drama of each widow, to focus on superficial things that only make the film feel eternal even if it doesn't last that long.

We quickly moved from the preparation of women without experience in committing a robbery, to political dramas about corruption and blackmail that seem to be there only to fill the plot.

The Wives/Widows

The strangest thing about the movie is that it wastes enormously the magnificent performance of a group of women that transmits intensity, emotion and feeling to each of their characters to make them stand out. We have a group of women who had nothing to do with the illegal actions of their husbands and yet while innocent are practically forced to plan a robbery, which I was waiting for the entire film and ends up being very flimsy.

Undoubtedly the most prominent is Viola Davis that manages to characterize a woman emotionally broken inside but determined to go ahead on its own, showing a hard face in front the rest of women, thus giving support to them in moments of great precariousness. Another that I liked very much was Michelle Rodriguez who this time leaves behind her rude and empty roles to give us a performance full of intensity, drama and maternal concern that surrounds all her life, giving her strength and weakness in many occasions.

One by one each of the women takes the necessary forces to fulfill her task in the robbery, and above all to support the others, because at the end of the day we can see how a group of partially unknown women bond each other to survive and go on with their lives without having to pay for the mistakes of their husbands.

Is it worth it?

Don't misunderstand me the movie is not even close to being bad, but I do feel disappointed by how poorly didn't I take advantage of the magnificent performances of the actresses and a story that they were able to develop better without having to force it with other themes that were not necessary. It is obvious that the creators wanted to make this film more intense by adding social dyes of blackmail and political corruption, but ended up loading it with unnecessary sub-plots.

Besides, I didn't like part of the end because it takes away motivation and strength from the whole main plot, after all if at the end you discover that the reason why you planned and performed a robbery was wrong, then you basically discover that everything you did was without reason and this takes away a lot of the strength that had already been imprinted on the group of widows.
