And it is that the first thing we can notice about this movie is the fidelity regarding the original comic, with all the virtues that this implies. Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is a technology genius, a brand new weapons manufacturer who, during a trip to Afghanistan for his agreements with the US military, is arrested and forced to build a missile for a terrorist group. During his captive period, he realizes that his true mission is radically different from what he has been doing so far.
In short, the argument, and the technical details, only change because of the fact that Iron Man has adapted to the 21st century. Let's change Vietnam for Afghanistan, and aspects of technological progress, which are a delight for geeks. In this sense, perhaps that may be the highest quality of the film: the definition and concreteness of the audience to which it is directed. And is that 'Iron Man' is more aimed at a demanding adult audience, who knows that little can be expected from the story of a superhero.

Therefore, everything implies that the film focuses more on the direction of actors and the solvency of the script, above the special effects, which there are, many and very good. Robert Downey Jr. is impressive as Tony Stark, endowing the character with endless nuances, richness of personality, cynicism, slyness and even sympathy, despite the empathic limitation of his social status. In fact, I no longer imagine another Stark other than Robert Downey Jr., and that reflects many conclusions. The immense charisma of the protagonist is, in short, one of the best achievements of the film.
The weakest point is in the villains, who at no time give the feeling of facing the hero. Both the leader of the terrorists and Obadiah Stane (partner of the Stark firm, turned into an ambitious maniac) seem too stubborn in a lost cause, such as defeating the iron man. And that Stane is interpreted with some effort by Jeff Bridges, actorzo usually. As for the other characters, we have Terrence Howard and Gwyneth Paltrow playing Colonel Rhodes and Pepper Potts, secretary of Stark, respectively. Well because his characters are mostly unnecessary in the movie (not in the comic), his presence is not enough to complement the hero. Howard meets no more, and Paltrow, despite his overwhelming physical presence (for every man with blood in his veins), immediately goes to the background for Robert Downey Jr.
There are some noteworthy scenes, such as the irruption of Iron Man in the people of Afghanistan, freeing refugees from the terrorist threat. The start of the film is devastating, with a cynicism (as I mentioned before), which is more reminiscent of more serious films like The Lord of War, rather than some other film of the genre seen before. In this sense, it is to be praised that it gets so wet in the moral dilemma of the beneficiaries of the wars, the little that world peace economically suits, especially in the first hour of the film. Also, Stark's extensive preparation to become the hero, based on a thousand technological devices and no natural gift, is portentous to the extent that a great psychological depth is given to the character.
However, some argumentative details become somewhat implausible, such as Stark's immense creative ability during his captivity, or the inevitable final fight between Stark and Stane. But considering that this genre forces the viewer to compare with other titles, Iron Man wins by looking at where you look.
It is an intelligent blockbuster, bold, very risky, with doses of humor, a good script, and characters at height. Combining all this with pure and hard entertainment, and the absolute absence of irregularity or shadow of boredom, makes Iron Man a joyful spectacle.
