Personally I like very much the stories that have components of drama that make us pay attention to every detail of the film, because in a certain way they create a really great intensity and anguish when we see them, and without a doubt, this is one of those movies.

Bridge of spies is a film that will make us live a story of that was born as a result of the world war where the political and military tension between certain countries creates an atmosphere so tense that even we will feel the intensity of an era so marked by war.

The film begins by establishing several stories that will need to converge in a single conflict in order to develop a collective plot that makes sense to the whole story. In the foreground, we have an old Russian spy who after living dissimulately and without raising any suspicion in the United States is finally discovered and captured by the American security agencies. On the other hand a young couple who in an attempt to get out of the still sensitive territory of the war in Germany are captured by the German state when they realize that the man is an American citizen, something that causes a lot of suspicions in the Europeans and that leads them to treat the young American in the worst way by basically giving him the label of spy and war prisoner. And finally, the film presents us an American pilot who, after having to carry out a reconnaissance mission through enemy territory, is shot down and captured by the Soviets, thus generating internal chaos within the American forces.

These three stories, although seems not to have much relationship with each other (apart from being based on the same bases of war and conflicts between Americans and Soviets), come together when the American government secretly contacts an insurance lawyer to carry out a mission of exchange and hostage negotiation between the two states in hopes of recovering the fallen American pilot.

And it is from there where I dare to say that the film finally comes to life because we will see the socio-political conflicts and challenges that the lawyer will have to face if he wants to carry out this whole secret hostage negotiation process. A man who will see his life totally exposed to public scrutiny and who practically can't defend himself beyond saying that he just wants "the Russian prisoner to have a fair trial and treatment".

The film generally brings out a number of complications and social aspects that make it intense, distressing and dramatic, because not only will we have to see how the lawyer deals with the negotiation process, being basically the meeting point between the three " enemy " nations, but he will also have to face the social consequences generated by the fact that as an American he has defended a Russian spy on American soil. And this is one of the most positive aspects of the film because it shows us in a great way the whole post-war scenario that the nations had to face.

The script is intense and distressing, highlighting more the internal and deeper drama of the characters than the general drama of the time, something that gives an extremely different and fresh touch to the film, preventing it from becoming another film about spies or about war dramas. The film stands out immensely for showing us how a man is trapped between the convictions and political agendas of three countries that are more interested in their secrets than in the welfare of their people.

With scenes that seem to come out of a documentary due to how well executed they are, making the film trigger a constant suspense as to how the lawyer will make the three nations accept the terms of the exchange and decide to cooperate secretly. And let me tell you that SPOILER that scene of the exchange where everyone stands firm on an agreement that seems to fall is one of the best scenes I have ever seen in my life; the suspense, drama, intensity and anguish of the characters knowing that the entire negotiation process can go to hell on a whim is simply brilliant.

Summary

For me this is a great movie that surely should have received more recognition for the direct and intense way it tells us a story as uncommon as the negotiation of a hostage exchange by enemy countries. A film that manages to reproduce the social and political nuances of an era of chaos and political clashes between enemy nations, all through perfectly created environments and charismatic characters who have done a great job transmitting the feelings and expressions of people marked by war.
