Amazon Prime Video has been the main antagonist of Netflix on the TV market for some years now. He did it with a totally alternative path. Initially he had introduced a formula that allowed the viewer to choose which pilots would become complete TV series. With alternate results that formula has been partially set aside leaving room for a new strategy. Few TV series but potentially devastating. So let's go to gigantic productions or to more limited productions in the media but with top-level actors and authors. Here too the results were mixed, just think of the clamorous thud of the TV series of Matthew Wiener and Woody Allen on which Bezos had invested so much. There have also been many successes but the story of Amazon Video has taught us that they have come from great ideas and not from large investments. This is why the arrival of Carnival Row was not accompanied by an electrifying wait. Despite a great cast, a gigantic production and an idea not bad, the outcome was very uninspiring.
Amazon Prime Video è oramai da qualche anno la principale antagonista di Netflix sul mercato televisivo. Lo ha fatto con un percorso totalmente alternativo. Inizialmente aveva introdotto una formula che consentiva allo spettatore di scegliere quali pilot sarebbe diventati serie tv complete. Con risultati alterni quella formula è stata parzialmente accantonata lasciando spazio ad una nuova strategia. Poche serie tv ma potenzialmente devastanti. Largo dunque a produzioni mastodontiche o a produzioni più limitate nei mezzi ma con attori ed autori di primissimo livello. Anche qui i risultati sono stati alterni, basti pensare al clamoroso tonfo delle serie tv di Matthew Wiener e di Woody Allen su cui Bezos aveva investito tantissimo. Ci sono stati anche tanti successi ma la storia di Amazon Video ci ha insegnato che essi sono arrivati da grandi idee e non da grandi investimenti. Ecco perchè l'arrivo di Carnival Row non era stato accompagnato da un'elettrizzante attesa. Nonostante un ottimo cast, una produzione mastodontica ed un'idea non male, l'esito è stato molto poco entusiasmante.
The feeling since the pilot is to have seen a good series, with excellent special effects, beautiful costumes, beautiful scenery, beautifully recited and well directed. That feeling, however, is accompanied by an instinctive desire not to continue to see it. And this is the biggest problem that can exist for a TV series these days. The viewer has now come to terms with the large television industry, is willing to give hours and hours a week to Netflix, Amazon, HBO but on condition that it can witness something unique, special or at least satisfying. This pact is less with Carnival Row as we are unable to give about 10 hours of our time to a TV series that simply does not seem to promise anything. Although the general feeling remains positive, there seems to be no stimulus in moving forward. Orlando Bloom does not puncture the screen. Delavigne is definitely in better shape and manages to make its mark. The story doesn't seem to be magnetic enough. The great settings seem to be a collage of things already seen. Above all the potential of the series seems to be missing. There does not seem to be the bite, the thread to follow with anxiety and the joy of waiting for a new episode. A pity that risks ending Carnival Row in that short list of very expensive and not very effective title
La sensazione sin dal pilot è quella di avere visto una buona serie, con ottimi effetti speciali, bei costumi, belle scenografie, ottimamente recitata e ben diretta. Quella sensazione però si accompagna ad un'istintiva voglia di non continuare a vederla. E questo è il problema più grande che possa esistere per una serie tv di questi tempi. Lo spettatore è oramai sceso a patti con la grande industria televisiva, è disposto a concedere ore e ore settimanali a Netflix, Amazon, HBO ma a patto che possa assistere a qualcosa di unico, speciale o quantomeno soddisfacente. Questo patto viene meno con Carnival Row poichè non riusciamo a concedere circa 10 ore del nostro tempo ad una serie tv che semplicemente non sembra prometterci nulla. Nonostante la sensazione generale resti positiva non sembra esserci stimolo nell'andare avanti. Orlando Bloom non buca lo schermo. La Delavigne è decisamente più in forma e riesce a lasciare il segno. La storia non sembra essere abbastanza magnetica. Le ottime ambientazioni sembrano essere un collage di cose già viste. Soprattutto il potenziale della serie sembra mancare. Non sembra esserci il mordente, il filo conduttore da seguire con ansia e la gioia nell'attendere un nuovo episodio. Un peccato che rischia di far finire Carnival Row in quella short list di titoli molto costosi e poco efficaci.
