One day during court a lady walks up and says “Sgt.? Do you remember me?” When I remembered who she was and what happened at her house. I asked her how she was and why she was here in court. She said that she was getting her protection order renewed that she had taken out a year ago. But she just wanted to thank me for saving her and her son’s life for what I did that night.
She began to tell me all of the changes that had happened since that night and I was sincerely moved by her telling me this because 99% of the time, domestic violence cases end the same way. The victim usually goes back to the abuser. It's a horrible revolving door. You can separate them, counsel them, arrest them, have restraining orders put on them but they usually go back. But this particular lady stuck to her guns and didn’t go back to her husband and her life changed dramatically for the better and she made an effort to thank me for everything I done that night. Just by her simply saying thank you and seeing the sincerity in her eyes, made everything worth it!
