Scientists have been working on a specific AI algorithms that would make mind reading possible. With reverse-engeneering signals sent from the brain, the researchers from the Carnegie Mellon University have been working on an AI which can read complex thoughts by looking at brain scans. Using the data gathered from a functional magnetic resonance imaging machine, the scientists "feed" the alghoritmic machine, which will later locate the "blocks" which the brain uses to create complex thoughts.
The impressive research has shown that the team could demonstrate where and how the brain is activated while procesing 240 complex events, covering everything, from people to different places, even few physical activities or aspects of social interaction. Understanding this triggers, the algorithm can use the brain scans to predict the thoughts in the period when the magnetic resonance was made, connecting the thoughts into coherent sentence.
The algorithm is reading the toughts with an incredible 87% accuracy. It can also do the reverse, receiving a sentence and then outputting an accurate image of how it predicted that thought would be mapped inside a human brain.
This research shows how far the AI has gone, from making robots that might outsmart us, to reading minds. Should we be fascinated by this or should we be scared? Is there going to be a robot apocalypse? Only time will tell.
