One of the functions of social media networks formatted like Facebook is to divide people into self validating feedback loops. This is done by design. Catering to people's various flavors of confirmation bias is monetarily lucrative.
This I believe is the incentive for organizing social media platforms in such a way.

That's a massive multi billion dollar Industry for the large corporations that own the majority of the social networks.
