Knowers, known and the process of knowing
Over a lifetime in being involved with creating art I have developed many styles. At university one of my teachers said: “But which style is Artur?”
It seems my entire artistic life has been to do with inventing visual languages but without having any idea of what I wanted to say. This meant that I have become skillful but not fulfilled.
It came to a point where "painting" was not satisfying me and I was contemplating giving it up.
Life is short and if I was not getting joy from creating art then what was the point?
The journey began with an illness
After a year of recovering from a painful illness, I stopped painting for three years. In that time I thought long and hard on; Was there meaning to existence? And; What was it I believed?
Only after knowing that could it be possible to have something to say and then find a way of conveying that through a visual form of communication. Art.
Simulation Theory and Emergence Theory captured my attention and made sense to me immediately. I listened to over 300 Near Death Experiences (NDE) found them very moving and insightful. The latest discoveries on “consciousness” also appear to give credence to consciousness continuing on after brain death.
ART - WHAT FOR?
Finally, I arrived at a question: Why create art at all?
I looked at the motivations of why artists create art and I came up with FOUR:
1) EXPRESSION - expressionism etc - a form of self-therapy. Should an artist expect others to be interested in their therapy never mind buy it?
2) MONEY - a way of making a living. cThis means you are basically creating a product in order to sell. You are a business person not an artist. And anyway, there are better ways of making money. Banking, Stocks/shares
3) FAME - I want to be the next Picasso! I want to have my work in art museums around the world!
This means you are motivated by ego, and you have a need to be praised or adored.
4) SPIRITUAL PURSUITS - this could also be classed as a form of self-therapy but it is not quite the same. Needing therapy suggests a form of illness (depression for example) and clearly, it is not correct to say that everyone who is looking to advance their soul is mentally ill - (although some atheists suggest that)
None of these reasons alone were enough to "motivate" me to create art.
So I began writing instead.
Suddenly entire stories began forming my head of which appeared to come from nowhere. It was as though they were being “downloaded” into my brain from somewhere else.
Was it from within myself or from outside of myself?
I remembered an interview with John Lennon in which he told of a dramatic episode of being in a storm in a sailboat. While he battled to keep the boat upright entire songs began entering into his mind. John later said he: “was tuned-in to the cosmos.” All these songs later became the “Double Fantasy” album released in 1980.
I discovered that this phenomenon of - fully formed writings, songs, symphonies, and even operas - has been spoken about for centuries by writers, musicians composers and so on. Even scientists have talked about such experiences. Nicola Tesla, for example, told of seeing a full functioning electric dynamo right before his eyes.
Where does this knowledge come from?
Is it entirely from within or is there something happening like John Lennon suggested; a connection is being made with the cosmos?
If so then it suggests that the cosmos/universe is somehow conscious?
Meaning it can think, is self-aware.
This brought me full circle to Emergence theory, Simulation theory and the holographic universe.
I arrived at a station along the journey of meaning and the station master explained to me that; the universe itself is NOT conscious, human-beings are NOT conscious, there is only; “consciousness.”
Nothing exists unless there is a conscious entity to witness existence.
This proves that “consciousness” is a fundamental part of reality.
“Consciousness” witnesses existence as well as itself.
Just as our consciousness makes us "self-aware" that we exist.
Thus we are witness to our own existence as well as the universe.
This is the most beautiful realization of my entire life.
Everything that exists, including "us" is simply part of this “unified field of consciousness.” Entities, such as human-beings, are playing a certain role in the whole scheme of things, in that
we are the knowers, the known, in a constant process of knowing.
John Lennon was right, “we” are constantly interacting with the “unified consciousness” all the time.
As with all interactions the flow of information must be both ways. When two people talk together we call it a conversation. Thus when John Lennon wrote those songs it was an interaction between his “entity” role (meaning the sum of his entire life experiences, including his ability to write music) and the “unified field of consciousness.” The songs were a kind of record (in sound form) of that particular interaction.
This is the bases of how I now create art.
They are NOT abstract images.
They are a visual record of my own personal entity interactions with the “unified field of consciousness”.
The flow of information meets in the middle somewhere and forms shapes colors and irregular patterns.
The easiest way to view them are like visual letters or prayers. I do not know what they mean but I know they have meaning because "we" are the knowers, the known, in a constant process of knowing and thus everything we do adds to the knowing.
Here is the first of which I have no idea what to call.
The search for meaning is not a destination but a journey that has no end. But along the way, there are breathtaking views. Artur Adamson.
