The museum was created in 1955 and it is located in its current facilities since 1985. The building was designed by the Colombian architect Rogelio Salmona (he's dead but he has amazing buildings in Bogota) and houses the largest collection of Colombian modern and contemporary art.
It includes painting, sculpture, drawing, engraving, graphic design and assembly works of renowned Colombian artists, such as Fernando Botero, Alejandro Obregón, Enrique Grau, Edgar Negret, Eduardo Ramírez Villamizar, Luis Caballero and Beatriz Gonzalez, among other artists. It also has a significant collection of works by Latin American artists.
With a constructed area of 5,000 m² (53,819.6 square feet), the building has six exhibition halls, two patios for sculptures, restaurant, library, book-store and a movie theater. It is mandatory to highlight the strategic use of space and the optimal use of sunlight. The museum has many permanent activities in the form of exhibitions of national and foreign artists, film series, lectures, workshops and seminars on film appreciation and criticism.
