I was given complete freedom with this commission which was to be a birthday gift for my client’s wife. My only instruction was that she loved horses.
I've met this couple and immediately observed their deep love for each other, so I wanted to portray that devotion in her painting.
Initial sketch using an India ink wash on rice paper
I start to paint layers of ink wash to build the image with values of light and dark.
The rice paper often gets wet, so I wait for the rice it to dry (or use a blow dryer) in between the layers of ink wash. The control of water to ink ratio is crucial for the ink to stay where I place it, and not bleed where I don't.
Calling it finished!
Signed, framed, and ready to package for mailing!!
As I do with most of my paintings, I offer them as gicleé prints, greeting cards, postcards and stickers…contact me if interested.
