Here we are! Born to be sketch artists! We're the princes of the oooneeverse! So! Sketchbook page through number four of the year 2011. This sketchbook sees the birth of The Modern Dragon .
The first few sketches are planned out in this one. It is quite a big step for me. Other than that it is just a hard working sketchbook, lots of planning of paintings and what not. This is also my first solid spine sketchbook without a binding of rings down the center! Which is great for drawing and for keeping Sauron at bay. No bound rings for you Sauron!
First page
The first page is perfect for either a really random doodle or for skipping entirely until you have confidence to come back and put something decent on it. As you can see I went with the former.
Dino skull @ Museum
At the Cape Town Museum they have a massive Suchomimus skeleton, so I sat and sketched the skull and then I imagined what it looked like with skin on. I like my dino's covered in scales !

Here you can see I'm trying to focus on more humorous images, more in line with the Modern Dragon.

Not every sketch turns into a painting, but drawing dragons in different poses helps me keep familiar with their anatomy and how they move.
As well as critters and other fantasy fodder like these Dwarves.
Sometimes I just like to challenge myself, with this image I had just come from a visit to a store that sold War Hammer figures. I wondered if I could design a character in that style. I sketched this out pretty quickly.
Then spent about 40 hours painting it. It's called The Destroying Angel, after the angel that went through the enemy camp of Sennacherib, king of the Assyrians and slaughtered 185,000 of his men in the night. Liberating Jerusalem in the time of Hezekiah. I thought it would be interesting to show an angel that wasn't a meek looking fellow in a white robe.
