Sparkly red horns
I'm sharing with you 'Horns', a drawing I created for Chapter Twenty Three of Doug Karr's amazing novel Dwelling.
Freshman year at college. Halloween. Her name started with an “L”. She was all slutted up in a little devil's costume, with sparkly red horns poking out of a headband, and somehow they'd lost all the other Star Wars characters and goblins, and found themselves alone sharing a pitcher of cheap draft, talking about her painfully recent breakup.

Creating an illustration for Dwelling

The image was drawn out in pencil, then masking fluid applied to the areas that would be the horns sequins. Once the masking fluid had dried areas of tone were built up with water and ink.

As light as a feather
Darker tones were applied using Liquitex ink, a feather was then used to create a series of marks at the base of the horns.

Once all the layers of ink were dry the masking fluid was removed to reveal the white circular shapes for the headband's sequins. Final details were drawn in with a dip pen and drawing ink.

The timing couldn't have been worse. Why couldn't she have cried it out at the bar? Her tears tarnishing a perfectly good sexy Halloween costume for the rest of Dorian's life.
