I learnt a lot of new things in the foundation year of my design course. Notan is one of my favourite art form that I learnt. I really like the use of two contrasting colours (mainly black and white) to make interesting forms and designs which enhances the beauty of the artwork. The more white the colour of the paper, the more it will compliment the black colour.
Notan is actually a Japanese word which mean the balance between dark and light. Japanese artists started this art form by black and white paper, cutting out shapes and lines to create unique designs.
I created a figure of an owl. I didn’t try different arrangements and simply pasted the negative of the black paper on the opposite side. It wasn’t an easy task and I faced a lot of difficulties in cutting the papers precisely and neatly. I also faced problems in pasting the black part as it was difficult to paste it at the right place and with 100% neatness.
