Art of Religion - Act III
A lot of painting decorates the walls of the stairs that leads to the second floor of the museum. A lot of these paintings had no descriptions to identify the artist and the year it was made. I would presume some of these works are recent but some of the signature of artist is hard to recognize.
St. Magdalene of Nagasaki & Fr. Ferdinand of Saint Joseph (Title Unknown)
Augustinians were sent to Japan to spread the Gospel from four countries Japan, Mexico, Portugal and Spain. Persecution occurred which led to their Sainthood. On the left is a depiction of the martyrdom of St. Magdalene of Nagasaki in 1634. Enduring 13 days of torture her head was placed inside a pit of garbage in the ground, while being hung upside down.
On the right is a depiction of the beheading of Fr. Ferdinand of Saint Joseph along with him was Andrew Yoshida who was also beheaded.

Sto. Niño de Cebu Pilgrimage Companion
A gift to Queen Juana by Magellan in 1521. The image has welcomed the friars in their arrival in Cebu. From that moment on the Sto. Niño de Cebu became their companion in their pilgrimage throughout the Philippine islands. This painting is a recent work but the original dates back from the 17th century.

An altar boy from a cathedral in Zaragoza, Spain. It has been said that this seven year old boy was crucified by the Jews in the year 1250. His image has been fabled and a feast was celebrated during August 31 which the church has suppressed. The original was an engraving by Mateo Gonzalez done in 1793. This original painting was inspired by the engraving.

Deposition of Christ from the Cross
Brought from Spain by Francisco de Ugarte. This was placed on the left side of the retalbo on the San Agustin Church. In 1945 the lower part was damaged by a bullet. Restoration was done in 1970 by Fr. Niceforo Rojo.

On the right Virgin of the Lost Son in which the original image was located in an asylum of lost babies in Valencia Spain. The painting was inspired by the engraving of the Virgin a book that was published in 1765 by Gr. Diego de Santa Teresa.

A depiction of the death of Joseph assisted by Jesus and the Virgin Mary on his deathbed.

Nuestra Señora del Rosario (Our Lady of the Rosary)
Scholars suggest that the painting was made by Chinese artist who migrated to the country. Other experts suggest that it is a Japanese painting my by the disciple of Giovanni a Jesuit artist who arrived in Japan in 1583.
