I designed this little critter in Illustrator and named him "Pegaseahorse," a cross between a pegasus and a seahorse. Then I took a lasercutting class and learned through much trial and error to cut him from a sheet of dichroic ("two-colored") acrylic...
...or wood. When I was a kid I used to use a magnifying glass to slowly burn crude images into wood, so you can imagine my delight when I learned to use this machine.
The laser is a magnificent invention.
It is an extension of photography, which also uses light to create art, but with significantly more energy and focus.
I also love layering art in different media and perspectives, then taking a photo or video, distorting it and using that as the starting point of the next round until the process overcomes the constituent objects. Sometimes the negative spaces can be as interesting as the originals. :)
