Père Lachaise Crypt • Graveyards
Above is a 16 mm film scan from a film that I shot in Pére Lachaise Cemetery in Paris, France. The cemetery was founded in 1804 and is the final resting place for many famous artists, writers, musicians, and celebrities. The cross and relief are an element of an iron door on a nameless crypt. I imagine the crypt was built to hold the remains of a young man from a wealthy family. The chalky white look of the face is appropriate but it seems to have occurred by chance from whatever mold or fungus can grow in a sleepy location over a couple hundred years. The crypt looks untouched by human hands but other forces seem to have taken their toll. Many of the oldest monuments in Père Lachaise are crumbling from neglect.
Below is a GIF from the film.
