In today’s piece, we will delve into the wonderful world of bamboo pillows. Yes, that’s right - it is a wonderful world! I’m not exaggerating either. Have you never slept on a bamboo pillow?! While I can’t promise you the sleep of your life, I can certainly attest to how comfortable they are (amongst other things).
Before we start discussing the reasons that make bamboo pillows absolutely divine, let us briefly touch upon how they are made.
As you’d probably expect, the first component is bamboo fibre (from pulp). This is processed and turned into a viscous substance which can be woven into material. In most instances, the bamboo fibres are combined with other threads (of natural or synthetic nature), which is what the pillow casing is ultimately made from. Which material is used will depend on the brand and price, but typically cotton and rayon are the most common.

The benefits of a bamboo pillow
Sustainability: In my opinion, its most excellent feature. Bamboo as a plant is hugely sustainable because it grows so rapidly and can be harvested regularly. Even though it is combined with other materials and must be processed to create the end product, i.e. the casing for a pillow, the process of doing so is more environmentally friendly and more sustainable.
Anti-microbial: Yes, that’s right - bamboo is naturally antimicrobial. It doesn’t take a genius to figure out that this a very good thing. Having a material such as bamboo near your head for several hours every night is highly beneficial. Your mucous membranes (eyes, nose and mouth) are susceptible to bacteria; therefore by using a bamboo pillow, you reduce the chances of this occurring. For those of you who like to know the science behind things, it is the lignin content of bamboo fibres that are resistant to bacteria (to a degree).
Hypoallergenic: Like many other natural products, bamboo is also known for its hypoallergenic properties (due to less processing and less exposure to chemicals). Although no product will ever be 100% hypoallergenic, i.e. no guarantee can be made that no allergies will be triggered, bamboo pillows are regarded as being much more gentle on things of that nature. Although the processing of bamboo isn’t as ‘natural’ as materials like cotton or silk, bamboo pillows can still be effective with regards to allergies and dust mites.
Absorbency: Bamboo can absorb moisture more effectively and efficiently than most synthetic fibres; therefore it an excellent choice for those who sweat during the night. Not only is it absorbent though - it will also stay soft, which means it is excellent for those with sensitive skin. During the summer months, I sweat a lot and find that cotton and synthetic pillows (and sheets) irritate my skin when I sweat, is finding a bamboo pillow was a life saver for my skin.
Temperature regulation: When it comes to ‘breathability’ and airflow, natural fibres almost always win when compared to those of a synthetic nature. In conjunction with micro-venting and the absorbability mentioned above capabilities, bamboo pillows help to draw moisture away from the surface of the skin to keep your temperature regulated. Whether you’re too hot in summer or too cold in winter, a bamboo pillow can really help to create the perfect environment for a good, restful night’s sleep.
