Bananas seem quite normal, but they are not. Ever wondered where the seeds are?
It turns out that Bananas usually have big black seeds, making eating them quite challenging. But a type of mutant banana was created that does not longer have seeds.
This banana has all genes present in 3 copies, much like down syndrome in humans, only for all chromosomes. As a result the seeds don't develope, leaving a big tatsy fruit.
But that comes with a big problem. How does one grow plants that have no seeds? In fact many plants can be grown from an offset. Meaning that a (special) part of the plant is removed and continues growing on its own. This means that we now have two cloned plants.
Not only are all Bananas mutants, they are also all identical clones of one mutated mother plant.
But they do tatse great.
