Eleven years ago today, we got the first glimpse of Bitcoin
On October 31st, 2008 the Bitcoin whitepaper was published.
Satoshi Nakamoto authored and released the bitcoin whitepaper 11 years ago on this date.
It was titled - "Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System"
Below is a copy of what it looked like:
Other important dates in bitcoin's creation...
Bitcoin didn't actually launch on this date 11 years ago. It was just the date the whitepaper was released.
On August 18th, 2008 the domain name bitcoin.org was first registered.
Then on January 3rd, 2009 Bitcoin officially came into existence when Satoshi Nakamoto mined the genesis block of bitcoin. Block number 0, which had a reward of 50 bitcoins.
Interestingly enough, the first block had this text embedded in it:
"The Times 03/Jan/2009 Chancellor on brink of second bailout for banks."
Perhaps as a reference for why this new form of money was needed.
Finally, the first open source bitcoin client was released on January 9th, 2009 officially opening bitcoin up to the world.
