With the launch of the William Shatner trading cards WAX is introducing a new mechanic called Trading Shard Cards. Each pack gives the buyer shards that can be combined to create a complete card with a random rarity. Each digital collectible features a caption written by Shatner, while special golden cards can be redeemed for a physical piece of memorabilia.
The collectible trading cards featuring William Shatner aren't the first collectibles by WAX. The platform has been issuing digital collectibles for some time now. They had their big breakthrough with the Garbage Pail Kids series, and more brands will follow. There's even a possibility that Marvel will step into the game.
Also for William Shatner this isn't his first move into the blockchain space. The former Star Trek-actor has been active for several years now. Last year he became a partner of Mattereum, to establish an authentication system for physical collectibles powered by blockchain technology.
What is WAX?
WAX is a blockchain company that uses a delegated proof-of-stake protocol to maintain its network. A total of 21 stakeholders keep the network alive, while another 36 are always on stand-by. These gatekeepers of the WAX blockchain are rewarded through inflation. That also means that transactions on the WAX blockchain are free.
During the past sales, WAX has allowed people to buy packs using their creditcard. In addition the platform allows anybody to make an account simply by using their Gmail address or Facebook login. These two elements together make the WAX blockchain and their collectibles very accessible to a mainstream audience.
Many blockchain projects realize that working on technical improvements is fun, but the user experience also requires work. In order to attract many users, it needs to be easy to interact with blockchain elements. This often means that things like private keys, wallets and transactions need to be simplified or hidden in the background. On top of that it needs to be easier for people to buy tokens, without the need to delve into trading.
