Recently with the Bitcoin mining boom, Graphics cards, AMD in particular, have been ramped up in price. Pissing off a lot of gamer's looking to upgrade. Nvidia have followed suit too.
When the RX 460 was released, bit miners soon realized how fast the hash rate was, Genesis mining warehouse, bought over 2000 of them from all available stores at the time. Pretty soon AMD couldn't keep up with the demand because miners, pro and novice were buying them all up.
Hell, even my R9 270x was worth almost double what I paid for it in the second hand market. £150 up to £280 on flee bay. This is a good example of how AMD GPUs are just being soaked up for mining, and it pissed off a lot of Gamer's as the card's they want is sold out or the price has been increased to outside there budget.
When the new AMD rxVega line up was released in June, the cost of the rxVega 54 was set at £299. less than one month later, they decided to up that to £399. Despite this, AMD again could no longer keep up with demand and sold out just about everywhere. This made a hell of a lot of gamer's very angry and set to social media to demonstrate there anger to AMD. Even the AMD CEO's personal email was leaked and thousands of people emailed her, in some cases with death threats.
For those of you who know about bit mining know that ASIC cards are the 'fastest' option if you want really high hash rates, but they are far and few between, not to mention, the cheaper AMD cards are more cost effective.
Fortunately, AMD and Nvidia (only took them 5 years) as of June this year, are rumored to be making ASIC cards aimed at the bit mining community. They will be sold without display ports so you can buy 1, 2, 10, 1000 of them and plug and play. They will be sold through AIB partners and, with any luck, be the cheaper alternative to a 1080ti or an AMD rxVega64.
AMD have finally got their shit together and are now keeping up with the demand of the market place as stores are getting RX500 series and Vega series cards back in stock. Looking through eBay, amazon and other sites, prices of the GPUs in general are now leveling back to normal value on both the second hand market and new. AMD RX 580 have gone from upwards of £600 new back to as little as £302 and even £175 on the used market.
The moral of the story is. If you send death threats to the owner, you will get what you want. (please don't send death threats, it could land you with time in prison. Just don't do it.)
