On 5/18/2010 laszlo posted to the bitcointalk forums making an order for a pizza in exchange for Bitcoin. Back then Bitcoin was only worth a few pennies. But fast forward to today & that same 10,000 Bitcoin is worth about $90,000,000. Goes to show the volatility of digital currencies like Bitcoin really are. But besides the point, I believe to my knowledge this was one of the first (if not the first) actual Bitcoin transactions for real goods & that in of itself is a real milestone for what Bitcoin has become today.
Back then there was no such thing as a Bitcoin debit card in which someone could buy just about anything in the world with the swipe of a card. Bitcoin has come a long way since then. There are numerous Bitcoin debit cards today like Bitpay, Crypto(.)com, Xapo, UpHold which I use to this day for a handful of transactions.
However today our Bitcoin transactions (from debit cards) are converted directly back to fiat currency when we swipe them & that is one of the reasons that I completely try to avoid using these cards. The goal for digital currencies is to try to use them as a means of monetary exchange & if one of the parties just converts them back to a fiat currency it defeats the point in which we are trying to use digital currencies in the first place.
One day I believe we will look back to this 10 year BitcoinPizzaDay & remember where we are at the moment in payment processing & how far it's come. From no merchant ever hearing of Bitcoin & wouldn't accept it for anything, from them not knowing they are accepting it with our debit cards today, to one day (in my mind) they'll have digital currencies stickers posted on their windows saying Bitcoin, Litecoin, DigiByte, Vericoin accepted here.
Today, thanks to BRDHQ on twitter today was a holiday that they were giving out free pizza all day. I was the first one to respond on twitter & place my order for a large Papa Johns pizza. I had to choose this place as 10 years ago this was the same place that 10,000 Bitcoin pizza was ordered form. For good luck, I had too. I was chosen for 1 of many people who receive a free pizza, & would like to say, Thank You once again.
Happy #BitcoinPizzaDay
Later I realized that BRDHQ was the BRD wallet on iOS & Android. It's a reputable wallet for smartphones. Though I've never used it, someone I work with uses this wallet for years & has never had any problems with them. So, I guess if you need a wallet they are a good choice as well.
