What are Smart Coins?
A SmartCoin is a cryptocurrency whose value is pegged to that of another asset, such as the US Dollar or gold. SmartCoins always have 100% or more of their value backed by the BitShares core currency, BTS, to which they can be converted at any time at an exchange rate set by a trustworthy price feed.
Users can borrow these assets 'into existence' on the BitShares DEX, using their own BTS as collateral. Then, using newly borrowed bitUSD, buy more BTS. Now wait until the price is a few cents higher, sell, and pocket the difference. It's one way BitShares traders increase their BTS holding and work towards financial freedom. It's also a way of market making for the DEX - providing a good service to others that wish to trade.
Of course, you must be careful with margin trading, as a falling price can quickly eat up collateral and foreclose a loan at market rates. The easiest way is to always keep enough to buy out of your position anytime.
