One of the biggest internet DNS processors, CloudFlare, announced in a blog post they are launching their IPFS gateway. Before diving too deep into the consequences of this, let's pause for a moment, to understand who are the actors here.
CloudFlare is much more than an DNS processor, it's a CDN and it also features a (very) resilient DDoS protection layer. That's the reason you see on many exchanges a message like: "Checking your browser before redirecting you to exchange.com. DDoS protection by CloudFlare, Ray Id: whatever". In other words, CloudFlare is a big shark.
IPFS stands for Inter-Planetary File System, and it's a decentralized storage system, very similar with a blockchain (it uses cryptography heavily and it's quite resilient). There are more technical details in the blog post linked above, but for now just keep in mind that IPFS was made by the same guy who launched a Proof of Storage token based on it, namely Filecoin.
As far as I know, there's no direct link between Filecoin, which uses a different backend and IPFS, which is more or less rogue (read: decentralized), but the fact that such a big player (some could argue CloudFlare is the biggest actor in that niche) is interested in these technologies is a very strong adoption signal.
Yesterday I wrote about cross-border blockchain-based mobile payment networks and now comes CloudFlare with this piece of news.
Again, this is not a strong speculative indicator, it didn't do anything to the markets (if anything, Bitcoin lost $200), but it's a more organic indication of the unstoppable adoption of decentralized solutions.
I'm personally happy with this unfolding, which is more silent, less spectacular but far more impactful than a BTC bull trend, which will probably do nothing than snowball into another big bubble, letting a lot of people on the sides, because they lost their life savings in the process. It's way better for the industry (and, yes, in the long run for the crypto assets price) to just adopt more and more use cases for already working blockchain technologies.
All in all, very good news.
