My friend and I were discussing some time ago. We had talked to a point when I decided to ask to know what he had been up to. He replied that his former boss called him to come and work for him, that he would just pay him something that would cater for him and transportation.
You mean you didn't discuss your pay with him? He said yes. I was a little concerned about the whole thing and how everything would turn out to be.
Immediately, I remembered sitting in that hall filled with people that were learning to learn and grow, listening to that wonderful facilitator, who shared his story on how he got his first well plaid job.
So, I decided to tell my friend his story.
The man had graduated from the from the university, very passionate about ICT. He really wanted to work with an IT firm, but it was very difficult for him to get a job. This man decided to work free of pay for any company that would accept him.
He he started the journey of job hunting, moving from one IT firm to the other explaining his mission and himself to them. Of course he got many NOs, but he didn't relent. Until he got to the last firm that considered him. Remember that this guy decided to work for free.
Though he stated it clearly that he came to do a free job, he still passed through series of interviews. And he did excellently well.
Finally, the job was given to him, but not with his employer reminding him that he was there to work for free. The guy reassured them that he understood.
Later that day, he got home excited that at least he had been given a chance to prove himself. He just needed to practice.
Out of excitement, he shared the news with his friends, who did not receive it with a welcoming attitude. "How on earth would you make such decision of doing a voluntary work?" They asked with all expression of resentment. How do you intend to take care of your bills?' But he told them and reassured them that by the end of the month, when others would be receiving their full salary, that he would receive his full salary too. His friends obviously did not understand what his plan were, and what he meant by his statement.
According to him, as he resumed work and handled the computers, he was able to identify where he could add value. He found out that most of their softwares were outdated, so, he quickly worked on upgrading them.
The manager was watching.
Then, he found out that punctuality did not matter to workers, he started going to work early. He went to work very early and closed very late. He did it in such a way that, he would come before everybody, and almost be the last to close.
By the end of his one month stay in the company, things had improved tremendously, and his salary was paid in full.
So, I advised my to identify areas in the company where he could add value and add value, that it would definitely give him an edge. This, he agreed to do.
Personally, I learnt a lot from the story above. And that has been guiding me even in my place of work. When I came, I looked for where value was lacking, and I discovered that it was in the area of speaking. The inability to make proper use of tenses was at it's peak. So I started handling them on "Use of English" which held every Monday then.
Our use of English lesson, brings all the pupils together, to learn how to use their tenses right.
And I took upon myself to correct any slightest mistake that I heard from anybody.
I'm grateful that today, the errors have reduced, and the mistakes are minimised. Sometimes my employer would say to me Mr Dare, I don't know what will happen to our English language studies when you leave this tutorial." I'm not saying I'm the best though.
What am I trying to say in essence? The importance of being valuable can never be overemphasized. Where ever you find yourself try to add value. Always have something that will make you stand out from the crowd.
In that place you're wat value can you give?
What distinguishes you from others?
Do you volunteer? Like to work voluntarily.
Growth, I believe core value, so look out for platforms that will help you to learn and to grow.
Always look for where to add value, and then add value and contribute your quota for the benefit of humanity.
