In our last discussion, we considered the reality that no evil power is expected to dwell in the heart of a believer in Christ Jesus. Now, let us go deeper into understanding how to practically overcome the works of the flesh and resist the devil’s schemes.
The works of the flesh — such as seditions, heresies, murders, envy, strife, and others — are not just outward acts, but manifestations of a corrupted inner nature. The devil’s strategy is to plant seeds of these evils in the hearts of men so that they will be hindered from enjoying the fullness of God’s kingdom. The Bible warns in Galatians 5:19–21 that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.
However, for the believer, God has made provision for victory. The Word says in Galatians 5:16: “Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.” This means that the surest way to overcome is by continually yielding to the Holy Spirit’s leading.
To walk in the Spirit means:
Feeding on the Word daily – for it is the sword of the Spirit that cuts down every satanic suggestion.
Maintaining a life of prayer – keeping your spiritual atmosphere charged and sensitive.
Fellowshipping with other believers – for iron sharpens iron.
Confessing the Word – speaking God’s promises and truths over your life.
When the devil tries to bring back old habits or thoughts, respond as Jesus did in the wilderness: “It is written…” (Matthew 4:4). Your victory begins with the Word in your heart and on your lips.
Remember, God has already given you the power to resist. James 4:7 says, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” The more you submit to God, the less room you give the enemy.
In the next episode, we will explore “The Power of the Renewed Mind in Deliverance.”
