Lately, I've been wanting to eat Crabs as it had been a long time I had them. I remember eating them back in 2017 when I went to Tarkarli. So I decided to go the market and get some fresh live crabs. There are a lot of ways to make Crabs, I personally like Crab Curry because you can eat it with Bread and Rice. If you are on a diet and you don't feel like eating rice you can try Crab Masala or Crab Tandoori.
I'm going to guide you through the entire process and recipe to cook delicious Crabs.
Ingredients
4 Crabs
3 Chopped Onions
1 Cup Roasted Coconut
Crab Legs for Stock
3 Green Chillies
1/2 Cup Tamarind Pulp
1 1/2 tablespoon Ginger Garlic Paste
4 Teaspoon Agri masala/ Red Chilli Powder
1 Teaspoon Turmeric
Salt to taste
So now that you have your ingredients arranged here comes the tough part, breaking the claws and legs. Be careful while you do that, you could lose a finger. Once you have successfully managed to break its claws and legs, then comes the cleaning part. To clean the crabs simply place them in the sink and make sure you use a Kitchen strainer. Crack the shell open with the hammer and clean its stomach, a lot of people eat the tomalley (the greenish stuff inside its belly). I personally don't like it so I clean it off. Depending on whether the crab is a male or female the tomalley could be different in colour, males have a green tomalley and females have orange tomalley.
Toss the onions in a frying pan with very little Oil, you can use Olive oil but it tastes best in refined oil.
Grate the Coconut and toss it in with the onions after the onions are golden brown, don't overcook the onions.
Set the Onions aside and let it cool
Now take the Crab legs and grind them in a mixer till they're fine. Unfortunately, I couldn't click a picture after I ground them as my hands were really messy. Take this mixture and add very little water to it and collect the juice via the help of a strainer. We will be needing this juice for adding flavour to the Curry.
Now take the onions and Toss it in a grinding pot and make a fine paste, then add the chillies and coriander leaves and grind it again.
The paste should look something like this
Here are the spices you gonna need. Agri Masala is a traditional mix of spices which you will only get in India. If you don't have Agri Masala you can use 2 Teaspoon of Red Chilli Powder and 1 1/2 Teaspoon of Garam Masala.
Heat up the oil in a big pan and add the ginger-garlic paste.
Simmer the flame and add all the spices at once.
Add the Onion and Chilli Paste and cook it for 5 mins, keep stirring it in between and add little water if necessary.
Then put the crabs in the pan and mix it well and let it cook for 5 mins
Remember the juice we made from its legs and the tamarind pulp? Probably a good time to throw in those so it will give it a nice flavour to the Curry.
Now Sit back and Enjoy your beer while it cooks, haha. let it cook for another 5-7 mins and add some water to it.
