When any of your domain is going to be expired be sure check your webmaster tools's "links your site" tab that expired domain is in your backlink list or not?

If yes disavow it immediately, because if the second owner makes any bad site on your expired domain it will affect your site rank and your site gets the penalty.

That happened with me recently, I got the penalty, shukar out of ranking nahi howi down howi just 1st page to 3rd page agai.

I solved the problem via disavow tool because the second owner made a bad site on my expired domain.
