Instead of Broadway, I saw a different kind of live show this week: Shen Yun. Shen Yun was a fantastic live performance. It is hard for me to put into words, so I will quote the official website, "Through breathtaking dance and music, Shen Yun’s artists tell of a time when divine beings walked upon the earth, leaving behind a culture that inspired generations." The eye-catching visuals take inspiration from many elements, "Ancient Chinese wisdom, infused with Buddhist and Taoist spirituality and values, gave birth to everything from medical innovations to opera, dance, architecture, and even martial arts."
Though I found the show enjoyable, some are trying to get the show shut down. "But after decades of communist rule, much of this divinely inspired culture has been destroyed or forgotten." It is good to see performers keeping this beautiful Chinese tradition alive in America.
I highly recommend this show to anyone (except maybe Xi Jinping). They are touring the Eastern US for a few more months. Check the website to see when they will be near you. Get an idea of what to expect by watching the trailer on their website.
