For those of you who don't know, Karl Pilkington is an English television presenter, author, comedian, radio producer, actor, and voice actor.
He rose to prominence as the producer of Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's radio programme on XFM. He made many appearances on the radio show, playing "himself".
As Pilkington's popularity grew, Gervais and Merchant decided to give him his own show, Idiot Abroad, where he bumbled across the Earth visiting the wonders of the world, and being set up by Gervais to have an annoying time for our amusement.
Honestly, the guy is hilarious -- a true natural comedic mind.
However, many people think that he is simply a humorous accident. That the man himself is just "like this", and his whole life is a comedy show.
I do NOT believe this.
I think that Pilkington is a well developed character. Perfected over years of refinement and practice. That Karl himself is simply a fantastic actor who's pulled one over on everyone and made a career for himself playing a moron.
Here's how I know.
Look at how good of an actor he is as Dougie in the miniseries Derek:
I mean, just LOOK at how GOOD he is!
There is simply now WAY that someone could be that good of an actor, even if they're just "playing themselves", i.e.: playing a character that was written for them.
Just think about it. In that show he has long-winded soliloquies and scenes where he plays against other actors so well that it looks natural.
"Pilkington" is a character that Karl has been developing over years of practice and refinement.
He's not actually an "idiot" but a comedic genius of our age.
