It's back to the weekly grind! We hope you are getting through Monday like a champ!
Today's Random Monday's is going to be about St. Patrick's Day, which was celebrated on Saturday 17th of March. However, due to our commitment to not post on the weekends we had to delay this post.
We've celebrated St. Patrick's in multiple places in the past from Rome to Bournemouth and from London to Bangkok. In each and every city, we will always find ourselves in an Irish pub. It just has to be done. What else has to be done is to order a pint of Guinness. Luckily, Sam likes this stout, but he often finds it tastes different in every country he has it in. Where's the quality control?!?! The best pint of the black gold is still from the source - the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin. The worst was unfortunately on Saturday, where the Guinness tasted stale and off like it had been sitting there for a few hours.
FUN FACT: Did you know Becca is a quarter Irish? And 1/10 Leprechaun... Okay, we made the last bit up, but wouldn't that be cool?
This year, we celebrated St. Patrick's in the same place we celebrated it last year; at Flann O'Brien's near our house. Flann O'Brien's is an Irish pub chain around Bangkok. There was already quite an atmosphere when we arrived at 19:45, fifteen minutes before 'Happy Hour' would end. So, first thing first, get in the drinks. When a pint of Heineken costs 110 baht (almost $4) and a pint of Guinness at 230 baht (around $8) this is rather a bargain for a chain like this. The pub managed to get two Thai male guitarists doing various cover songs from the 60s to the 90s. They sang the type of songs you would expect to hear in any other pub in the Red Light District (Patpong) or at any karaoke venue. Yet, better to hear live music than the same playlist that gets played every day.
There were plenty of people wearing green, however since we just came from a football match we weren't sporting a green shirt. We noticed that the expat community were out in full force. We have a few international schools around our neighborhood and so we expect some of them celebrating St. Paddy's were either working there or are the parents that send their kids to those schools. Still Sam was surprised and said to Becca that he has never seen this many expats in one place outside Bangkok in a 'local' place. We ended up staying just for a pint as we were tired from the day and really weren't in the mindset to embrace St. Paddy's Day. Still, we enjoyed celebrating St. Paddy's with a pint to mark the day of the patron saint of Ireland!
