it is a tradition (like in most countries) to celebrate the new year with some great fireworks. It's the same for the household Verhey :). My boy's (especially the youngest) love fireworks and I must confess I like it too very much.
When I was young I already started thinking about fireworks at the beginning of December, and I see a big resemblence with our youngest kid. The oldest looses his interest every year a bit more but he stil likes it though :)
In my youth we always got a lot of fire crackers and two or three days before new years eve we gathered with a big group of friends fireing off the crackers in our neighbourhood. It was quiet harmless and we had respect for the people walking their dogs so there was never a big problem. At this moment in Holland a lot of discussion is going on to ban fireworks completely and only have special places and companies to ignite fireworks. The most due to the illegal fireworks that are available and are really dangerous and way to loud. I think that is a pitty because fireworks are a tradition of which we have a lot of fun. Though I do understand the discussion because a lot of people get wounded by this illegal stuff... Some of those are as powerfull as a grenade....
But back to the fun part. Every year I go with my sons to Germany (about 50 km from our hometown) to buy the ornamental fireworks, we do this for two reasons. The first is because the fireworks is way better then the goods you can get in Holland and the second is that it is way cheaper (I think mostly because of the rules that are implemented in Holland for selling fireworks). Every year it looks like more and more dutch people are driving to Germany because there are real traffic jams at the border and the stores (see the picture above, this was at 07.00 AM lol).
We went to Bocholt, just across the border, to the Lidl. At the opposite to Holland the fireworks are sold right from the supermarket itself, in Holland companies have to comply to much tighter regulations which influences the price of course.
In the picture below the yield of my youngest son :) He loves to expose it in the garage, count it, orden it ....as long as he can be busy with his fireworks. (he can't fire them because we told him he could only do this on new years eve ).
We were at 07.00 AM in Bocholt and finally got the fireworks at 08.30, we had to wait in a queue for some time, but we bought some croissant's on the side ;).
When we were back in Holland we had to go to the local fireworks shop to pick up our order of firecrackers and then we were finished and "the eagle has landed" lol...
The funny thing is that my wife hates fireworks and everything around it, so if the boys have questions about fireworks, for how much money they are allowed to buy and stuff...She sends them right over to me... And I can understand the guy's..... I loved it too when I was young :)
but safety first, glasses on, light the fireworks with a wick instead of a lighter and always "Look around first if there aren't any animals nearby"...
Have (safe) fun !!!
Have a great day
