Chapter 74: So It Begins
In the Capital Region. Pardi had been very busy over the past couple of months. He had developed and was currently mass-producing his solution for ‘decontaminating’ the water supply of the regions. However, he was most committed to his new creations. He had thousands of babies that were almost fully incubated. These were Linap babies, but without the genetic weaknesses that had plagued his species for generations.
Pardi, through testing, believed he had created the perfect genetic combination for the Linap. These young Linap would be the future of Sapia. He was now convinced that Sapiens would no longer be needed. The babies had also been genetically modified to mature faster, another genetic trait taken from the reptile-like creature he had been experimenting on. These babies would become adults in half the time.
Pardi was not satisfied with just the babies. He wanted new adult Linap immediately. He had around a hundred large incubators. They contained genetically modified Linap that were grown with an excessive amount of the reptile rapid growth gene. These Linap were only a few months old, but, in size, they were almost fully grown. Pardi had used another technology on them. This technology enabled him to input information directly into the brains of the incubated Linap. He was trying to pump several years of education into their brains in just a few weeks. Pardi was impatient. He needed to know if his new Linap could immediately replace Sapiens. He needed to know if there would be complications in adulthood.
Pardi was not just interested in restoring the Linap to their former, healthier selves. He wanted to change the way reproduction was done permanently. He wanted greater control over the population. Natural reproduction was inconsistent and unreliable. Birth rates could be too high or too low. Reproduction using external incubators would always produce the right number of the next generation.
The solution he was using to ‘decontaminate’ the water was going to cause infertility in low quantities and death in higher quantities. He would have liked to wipe out Sapiens immediately, but he knew he needed time to replace them as well as to allow himself to sort out any complications with the new generation of Linap. His testing had been a success, but it was limited to mostly Sapiens.
Pardi wanted infertility in both the Sapiens and the existing Linap. Therefore, future generations of Linap could only be created in an incubator, and Sapiens would become extinct. The newly created Linap would be fertile, but that did not matter. He only intended on creating male Linap. He believed female Linap were unnecessary. He considered them the weaker sex and one of the reasons that the Linap needed to pander to the Sapiens. He was also concerned that genetically imposing infertility on the new Linap would flaw his design and possibly cause other unintended weaknesses.
After spending another day in the basement studying the progress of his new breed of Linap, Pardi returned to his office. He called the heads of his manufacturing plants. He told them to prepare the solution to be transported by train to the southern regions. He wanted the Adoy and Jeed regions to receive a fatal dose and the others just enough to cause infertility.
Pardi despised the rebellious nature of some of the residents of Adoy and Jeed. He wanted to wipe out West as well, but he knew the region was too valuable to lose at this point. He decided he would send extra empty tankers to West to see if that would spark a reaction from Lily. Even though Lily was going to lose her position as governor in the new Governors Election, Pardi feared she could still be a threat considering the influence she still had.
Pardi went home to be with his daughters. He had ordered them more presents as he was still trying to appease them over the stunt he required them to perform on Lily. He had ordered fancy dessert pizzas for them and his favourite Cabas Ranch meat for himself. He had also invited Collingswaggle over for the meal.
‘Are you still angry with me?’ Pardi asked the twins as they opened another round of presents.
‘No, I’m more sad than angry,’ said Yassme. ‘I thought we were going to be a family.’
‘Lily wasn’t who she pretended to be,’ said Pardi.
‘She still has more integrity than some,’ said Yassmay.
‘We live in a complicated world,’ said Pardi. ‘I’ve done unpleasant things, but I do them for the greater good and for those I really love.’
He held both his hands out to the twins. Yassme took one hand. Yassmay hesitated. Yassme looked at her sister. Yassmay slowly reached out to take Pardi’s other hand.
The girls began to eat their dessert pizzas. The doorbell buzzed. Pardi went to open it. It was Collingswaggle. He was dressed in a red and black dress. He was wearing makeup and had a flower in his hair.
‘I decided I’d come over as the sexy Miss Coleenswaggle tonight,’ he said as he pushed his chest forward and tilted his head back.
‘Delightful,’ said Pardi as he licked his lips. He took Collingswaggle into the dining area, where the twins were sitting.
‘Oh great. We’re back to this again,’ said Yassmay as she rolled her eyes.
Pardi placed a slab of meat on Collingswaggle's plate.
‘Only the best stuff for you, beautiful,’ said Pardi as he winked at Collingswaggle.
‘I’m just happy things are back to normal after all these months,’ said Collingswaggle.
Pardi smiled, and then he began to laugh.
‘Well, normal for us,’ said Collingswaggle as he began to chuckle as well.
‘It feels right,’ said Pardi. ‘Isn’t that the most important thing?’
Collingswaggle nodded. Then, they both gently kissed.
Both Yassme and Yassmay left the table.
‘We’re going to play video games in the other room,’ said Yassme. Yassmay glared angrily at them as she followed her sister out of the room.
‘Have fun,’ said Pardi.
Early the next morning, the trains from the manufacturing plants headed off to the southern regions. Pardi was sitting in his lounge, watching the security cameras as each train left the plants.
Collingswaggle came in. ‘You seem a little anxious this morning,’ said Collingswaggle as he sat next to Pardi.
‘We are on the verge of changing Sapey and Sapia for good,’ said Pardi as he looked at Collingswaggle. ‘We should be on the verge of our species greatest moment.’
‘Is that a little doubt in your voice?’ asked Collingswaggle.
‘I don’t doubt my method, but I’m fearful of the outcome,’ said Pardi as he looked down at his hands. ‘We have reached the point of no return. Whatever happens now, we can’t go back.’
‘Why would we want to?’ asked Collingswaggle.
‘I can’t answer that question yet,’ replied Pardi softly.
After a brief pause, Pardi smiled at Collingswaggle. ‘I’m sorry. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed with everything. It’s an uncommon emotion to me.’
‘A once in a lifetime feeling of vulnerability, I’m glad you could share,’ said Collingswaggle.
Pardi sighed and gently shook his head. ‘Uncommon these days, but certainly not once in a lifetime,’ he replied.
‘Care to share?’ asked Collingswaggle.
Pardi rubbed his forehead while frowning slightly. He looked Collingswaggle in the eyes for a few seconds. Then he nodded.
