Chapter 93: Feels Like the End
Meanwhile, back in the Capital Region, Orcille had been busy shapeshifting into different security guards in an attempt to find out the whereabouts of the twins. After several days of trying, he finally found out their location. They were kept in a makeshift apartment in the Industrial Zone.
Orcille shapeshifted into the guard who brought them their food. Orcille approached the door of their apartment. ‘I have your food,’ announced Orcille as he knocked on the door.
Orcille pressed his face against the door and whispered. ‘It’s me, Orcille. I’ve come to rescue you.’ From the other side of the door, he heard little footsteps approaching.
‘Feels like you have taken forever,’ whispered Yassmay through the door.
‘Not so easy finding you,’ replied Orcille.
'I want both of you to turn invisible. Then follow me out of here,' instructed Orcille.
Orcille unlocked the door, and the twins became invisible.
Orcille placed the tray of food inside the apartment. Then he locked the door. Orcille walked out of the area surrounding the apartment. Then he also became invisible.
‘What’s the plan now?’ asked Yassme.
‘The train again,’ said Orcille. ‘This time we remain invisible until we are out of the Capital.’
‘I’m not sure we can hold on that long,’ said Yassme. ‘They removed the implants from our feet. Holding this form is so much harder now.’
‘We’ll move fast,’ said Orcille.
Ten minutes later, the guard began preparing the twins lunch.
‘Hey, what are you doing?’ said a second guard. ‘You just gave them lunch.’
‘No, I haven’t,’ said the guard. ‘I’m doing it now. Boss won’t be happy if the girls are hungry.’
The second guard went over to check the cameras. He rewound the camera footage to ten minutes earlier. ‘Look!’ he said in frustration. ‘That’s you bringing the food to them.’
The two guards watched the video footage from the camera. 'You are clearly up to something,' said the second guard as he pulled out his stun gun.
‘Put it down,’ said the guard. ‘That’s not me, I swear.’
The second guard stunned the first guard with his stun gun. This left him temporarily paralysed.
The second guard rushed to the apartment to check on the twins. He opened the apartment door to find they had gone. The second guard called Pardi to inform him of the twins escape.
Pardi was in the laboratory, performing tests on his newborn adult Linap. He was incredibly pleased with their progress and their health. The call from the second guard interrupted his testing.
‘Sir, the twins have escaped,’ said the second guard.
‘How did that happen?’ asked Pardi.
‘The other guard released them,’ replied the second guard.
‘Assemble the guards at the train station,’ said Pardi with a sense of urgency in his voice.
Pardi hung up the phone. ‘Oh, Orcille, I so admire your commitment,’ Pardi said to himself.
Pardi called the train station, telling them to delay all trains. Pardi entered the lift to leave the laboratory.
Orcille and the twins had arrived at the train station. They went to the platform where the train was expected to arrive the soonest. After waiting a few minutes, the delayed message appeared on the screens.
‘I think he knows we’re here,’ whispered Orcille to the twins. ‘We need another way out.’ Orcille and the twins went into the toilets. They went into a cubicle together.
Yassme was struggling to remain invisible. ‘You can do this, Yassme,’ said Yassmay as she clutched Yassme’s hand. They began doing breathing exercises together.
The guards were now on all the platforms. Pardi called to order all the platforms to be cleared of passengers.
‘Let’s leave now,’ said Orcille to the twins. All three became invisible.
They exited the toilet. They walked towards the lifts. There was a guard approaching in the other direction. The guard dropped a smoke canister in front of them. The smoke caused all three of them to cough and lose their invisibility.
‘Found them, sir,’ said the guard into his phone.
Yassme and Yassmay ran away from the guard. The guard pursued them. Orcille tried to block the guard but stumbled and missed.
The guard pulled out his stun gun. He aimed at the twins. He fired. He stunned Yassme in the back. Yassme fell towards the track. Yassmay turned to grab Yassme, but their momentum took them off the platform. They both fell onto the track and then rolled off the track. They fell all the way to the ground floor.
Orcille ran up behind the guard. He slammed him hard to the ground. Orcille ran over to where the twins fell. He could see them lying on the ground floor in a pool of their own blood.
Orcille screamed loudly. He ran back to the guard, lying on the ground. He repeatedly stomped on his head until it split open. Another guard ran towards Orcille. Orcille grabbed him and hurled him off the platform. Orcille walked back to the guard lying on the platform. He took the stun gun from him. He got in the lift and descended to the ground floor.
An emergency services vehicle arrived shortly. The emergency staff rushed over to check on the twins and the security guard, the one who had been thrown off the platform by Orcille. They pulled out two stretchers from their vehicle. They gently lifted the twins onto two separate small stretchers before putting them in the back of the vehicle. The vehicle rushed off to the medical centre.
A few minutes later, a second emergency vehicle arrived. The emergency staff placed the security guard on a larger stretcher. They placed a white sheet over him before putting him in the back of the vehicle. The vehicle slowly departed for the medical centre.
Pardi had been informed about what had happened to the twins. He rushed to the medical centre. He ran through the front door of the emergency department. He approached the staff at the front desk.
‘Where are the Carvaress twins?’ demanded Pardi.
A medical expert approached Pardi. ‘We have the twins on life support. It is not looking good.’
‘Transfer them to the Carvaress wing of the centre now,’ demanded Pardi.
The medical expert responded, ‘We have the…’
‘Just do it,’ interrupted Pardi angrily.
The medical staff rushed the twins and all the medical equipment they needed into the Carvaress medical wing of the building. The Carvaress staff took the twins off them. They raced them down the corridor to one of the operating rooms. Pardi ran with them. On entering the operating room, Pardi instructed the staff to leave.
Pardi looked down at their lifeless bodies. ‘This is not over,’ he said to them.
A scientist entered the room. ‘I have batch 19CE,’ said the scientist.
‘Thank you,’ replied Pardi.
‘Sir,’ said the scientist.
‘I know,’ replied Pardi. ‘This is their only chance.’
The scientist placed the rack containing the vials of 19CE on the side counter. He then exited the room.
Pardi filled two syringes with 19CE. He injected both twins with it. He stood back, watched, and waited. He heard a sound and saw a slight shimmer on the other side of the room.
‘Orcille, are you here?’ Pardi called out.
Orcille appeared. Orcille walked over to the twins. Pardi looked down at the ground.
‘It’s too late,’ said Orcille.
‘No, it’s not,’ said Pardi. ‘Give it time. They will heal.’
Orcille walked over to Pardi. ‘It’s too late,’ he repeated.
Pardi looked up at Orcille. ‘You took them from me,’ he said angrily.
‘I’m sorry,’ replied Orcille.
‘So am I,’ said Pardi.
Pardi took a deep breath and clenched his fist. He looked Orcille in the eyes. ‘I want you to go. Go anywhere you want. I don’t want to ever see you again.’
‘I can do that,’ replied Orcille.
Pardi put his face in his hands. Orcille walked towards the door. On his way, he grabbed a vial of 19CE.
Orcille opened the door. ‘Goodbye, Dad,’ he said as he turned to look back at Pardi. He waited for a few seconds, but Pardi did not respond.
Orcille went through the door, closing it behind him.
Orcille returned to the train station. The trains were running again. Orcille took the first train heading towards the Central Agriculture Zone Regions. Orcille walked to the furthest and quietest carriage. He sat in the corner seat. He pulled his legs off the ground and curled up into a ball. He rested his head against the window. He looked back on the Capital Region as the train pulled away. A tear rolled down his face. He wept for the loss of the twins. He wept for his father. He wept for what he believed could be the looming destruction of the whole region.
Meanwhile, on the south coast, one of the trains broadcasting the creature’s scream had attracted the attention of some enormous creatures. These creatures emerged from the water. They climbed onto the land. They began pursuing the train. Shortly afterwards, more creatures rose from the water. Before long, there were thousands of giant reptile-like creatures taking to the land and following the train tracks. The Sentray had returned.
