What we are doing here is more than just Blogging, we are practicing true democracy by using decentralized consensus mechanisms. I have not seen enough "More Equal Animals" discussion but I think it deserves the time and attention.
"Society breaks down when any aspect of consent breaks down or is corrupted. This is what is happening today and today’s outcome is predictably derived from fundamental, mathematical, algorithmic, game-theoretic flaws in our implementation of democratic principles. It is not enough to “drain the swamp” and “vote them out”. The rules of the game ensure that the government will evolve toward corruption and away from democratic principles. Have you read this book yet?
In chapter 3 titled "True Democracy" Dan starts by asking the obvious question.
The elephant in the room,
"Do you feel like your vote really matters?" "Today the only thing we can seem to reach a consensus on is that our system is broken."
And that much is self evident to anyone who pays attention to the political football season even once. The process divides the country one against his brother, and the hopelessness of the situation becomes even more obvious when the results come in and the status quo rolls along.
Choosing to become informed on any particular aspect of the flaws of the system in itself is not harmful however it is impossible for one person to brilliantly conclude the solutions to the problems of the world. Anyone who claims to have all the answers, is either a politician, or selling something.
Dan introduces us to his first description of True Democracy in the book.
"True democracy implements a process that harnesses the wisdom of the crowd and systematically protects against the need for global knowledge to make sound independent decisions."
This may be what he was referring to earlier when he wrote,
"The ills of society are an emergent property of the philosophy of the people, so in this book I lay the framework for a new approach to, and philosophy of a true democracy.""
And it is here when the reader will discover a hard turn into a mirror. In the age of convenience, when the average person is carried from crade to grave through the machine of consumerism and culture, an individual is taught to conform.
Go to school, get good grades, go to college, get a job, buy a car, a house, work for 40 years then retire and die. It is all laid out before us and any who dare to step out of line, aspire for more, or choose to opt out, are ridiculed if not cast out from society completely.
"Independence is the foundation of freedom and democracy. Freedom and “democracy” don’t necessarily give you independence. Independence requires self-reliance and responsibility."
Independence is highly esteemed and yet most know nothing of it.
One of my favourite quotes is right from his post on Hive.
"It is for this reason that I attempt to make the minimum possible assumptions in the hope that there is still some foundation we can build upon to achieve peace."
The text quoted here is from Dan Larimer's new book "More Equal Animals". I want to introduce you to this book, so that others can discuss the true meaning of Consensus, and perhaps understand what is actually being practiced here on Hive. Is this platform an experiment in True Democracy?
