9th September 2017. Roman Gonzalez and Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, will go head to head, to bring us the eagerly awaited rematch of their March 2017 contest for the WBC super flyweight title. The bout will take place in StubHub Centre, Carson, California.
Red Corner
In the red corner, the champion, Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, fighting out of Si Sa Ket, Thailand. He comes to the ring with a 48 bout record, consisting of 43 wins, 4 losses and only 1 draw, 39 of those wins come by way of knockout(81% K.O. ratio). He is a two time super flyweight world champion and is the current holder of the WBC title. Sirisaket stands at 5'3"/160cm and has a reach of 63.5"/161cm. He is 30 years old
Blue Corner
And in the blue corner, the challenger, all the way from Barrio La Esperanza, Managua, Nicaragua, Roman Chocolatito Gonzalez. He enters the ring with an almost flawless record of 47 fights, 46 wins and only 1 loss, with 38 of those wins coming by way of knockout(81% K.O. ratio). He has won world titles from Minimumweight, up to super flyweight, making him the first ever Nicaragua 4 weight world champion. Roman stands at 5'3"/160cm and has a reach of 64"/163cm. He is 30 years old.
The first fight
The first fight was an all out, all action slugfest fought at a extremely frenetic pace, that saw Gonzalez throwing over 1000 punches, while Srisaket threw just under the 1000 punch mark. Due to this high level of action and excitement, the fight is currently in contention for 2017's fight of the year.
The contest contained more drama than an American soap opera, with a first round Knockdown, blood covered competitors, a crimson splattered canvas and a decision that was in disagreement with the views of the vast majority of those who had the privilege to be sitting at ringside, or those who where lucky enough to be viewing from home.
The judges, in the end, saw the fight in favour of Srisaket, thus inflicting the first ever defeat on Chocolatitos, then perfect, but now flawed record. Two of the judges scored the fight 114-113 to Srisaket, while the third scored the fight a draw, even though the punch statistics seemed to suggest otherwise. Chocolatito landed a massive 150 punches more than Sirsaket.
The Rematch
Although the first fight is marred by the poor decision of the judges, in a way it was a blessing, because we the fans, would most probably not have been treated to the chance to watch it all over again. Hopefully this time around, if it goes to the scorecards, the judges get it right, regardless of who wins.
I expect Chocolatito to start a little more cautious this time, in an attempt to avoid another early knockdown. He will still be aggressive and exciting, just more aware of the mistakes that he made in the first fight. The rematch should pick-up from where the first left of, all action all out war, a treat for long time fans and also for those who are new to the sport.
In the end Chocolatito should prove too much for Srisaket . He has more to prove, and more to gain. He will regain his world title. He will avenge his first ever defeat and move some way to recovering his pound for pound title and he will achieve justice for an perceived injustice, add to this the fact that he is the better fighter, and the outcome should be all but written.
Undercard
On the undercard, keep an eye out for Naoya "the monster" Inoue, who puts his WBO super flyweight title on the line against Antonio Nieves. Inoue, could be a potential future opponent of the winner of Gonzalez vs Rungvisai.
