Rodger Garrick-Steele: The investigator of the possible crime of Conan Doyle, next to the grave of Fletcher.
Both literature and major media not only have the power to interpret reality, but to create it. In a neighboring country, the actress who played "bad" in a telenovela was attacked in a shopping center. A madwoman squeezed and gave him a letter: he did not forgive his dark intentions in the plot of the small screen.
And on the Colombian Caribbean coast, in Aracataca, the town of García Márquez, some spontaneous children have a new activity: For a few coins they take the walker to know the supposed tomb of the gypsy Melquíades, the houses of Úrsula Iguarán and Remedios la Bella, or the wall against which Colonel Aureliano Buendía was shot. In the end the traveler does not know if he was in Aracataca or in Macondo. Pure magical literary tourism.
Just as the children of Aracataca appreciate that the characters of One Hundred Years of Solitude inhabit the town, Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of the infallible detective Sherlock Holmes, was happy that his character did not come out of the novel to clear up a crime.
An English researcher, Rodger Garrick, together with Scotland Yard, is investigating the famous writer. First conclusion: The novel The dog of the Baskerville was not written by Conan Doyle, but plagiarized to his friend Bertram Fletcher, who never received recognition.
And he says that Conan Doyle went further: He had an intense romance with Fletcher's wife and between the two they decided to poison him. "The cause of Fletcher's death has been typhus," said Dr. Conan Doyle. But photos taken days before his death show him happy, healthy, smiling. And they ask themselves in Scotland Yard, why, being typhus such a contagious disease, there were no other sick people nearby? Why was your transfer in an open caravan, without any precaution?
But someone knew something. When Arthur Conan Doyle was sworn in by the English crown, a mysterious package arrived at Buckingham Palace. He wore dirty clothes and went in the name of Sherlock Holmes, the literary character. When opening it, a small note: "Mr. Holmes: Please investigate the dirtiness of that doctor so close to you". Obviously it was a veiled accusation, but with a clear interpretation: in the life of the now Sir Arthur Conan Doyle there was a stain.
Unlike the children of Aracataca, some say that Conan Doyle was happy that the characters in the novels were forever trapped between the pages of the books.
In chess as in life, loose pieces are a danger. Here the weakness of the black is exposed.
