I haven't played 2048 in a long time, but—if I recall correctly—the easiest way to play is to try to always have the biggest number in one of the bottom corners (I liked to use the bottom left corner, I think). The next largest number should be next to that, and etc. That way, if you have 1024 in one corner, 512 next to it, and 256 next to that, 128 next to that, 64 next to that, 32 next to that, and you manage to make a new 32 next to that (not very hard), you can swipe them over to eachother so you get to 1024.

When you get used to this strategy, getting up to even 4096 shouldn't be too hard.
