It takes awareness of solutions to get individuals to onboard, the biggest benefit and hindrance to steem is that it costs nothing to make an account here. However it does take a few days using mobile phone registration.
The other main issue is that the crux of selling your Steem to currency is still to difficult for many individuals to utilize and promote their content.
Over time as more users join the early adopters will be rewarded with Steem that is worth a lot more than it is now, example I sent you 0.08 cents if it was back in 2013 that little upvote in 2018 would be a full dollar.
This provides an incentive for some users to make the transition now and build content and attention, then as the value appreciates this attracts more users and slowly but surely leads to mainstream adoption.
In the same way content creators should expect that they may make a small revenue now and steamroll it in the future. Early youtube content creators were able to build followings by the time it became mainstream they became the power users and we able to be rewarded.
We are still at a niche stage where the problem is acquiring attention once we hit the next adoption stage we will see another influx. For now it's good to enjoy the system at its limited stage and wait a while if you can afford to do so to make more in the future.
