Bylo to dávno. Za vlády císaře Josefa II. Mlynářova Matese odvedli k armádě, k husarům. Ať chtěl, nebo nechtěl... Nakonec si zvykl. Prošel mnoha válkami a byl to statečný voják.
Měl ale jednu špatnou vlatstnost. Miloval hru v karty. Jakmile začal hrát, neviděl, neslyšel, dokud všchno neprohrál.
A stalo se tohle. Mates byl zrovna posádkou v Domažlicích. Na náměstí sedl do hospody, zašustily karty... A to byl konec. O půlnoci už Mates vsadil i svou šavli... A prohrál.
Cestou do kasáren měl hlavu plnou starostí. Napadlo ho, že má reservní rukojeť a šavli si vyřeže ze dřeva. Válka zrovna není, nikdo nic nepozná...Ale to nevěděl to nejhorší.
Císař v té době často konal inspekčn í cesty. Incognito, tajně. A když Mates prohrával svoji šavli, seděl císař s knížetem Kounicem u vedlejšího stolu v přestrojení za dělostřelce. Císař všechno viděl a všechno slyšel. Matese si zapamatoval.

Ostatní vojáci padali na kolena a začali se křižovat. Zázrak! Císař se smál a smál. Povýšil Matese na desátníka, protože potřeboval chytré poddůstojníky... Ale zároveň ho varoval, že ještě jednou sáhne na karty a trestu neujde.
