A few days ago I decided to start a vertical tomato garden using recycled materials. Here I share with you a summary of the steps taken and their respective images.
Hace algunos días me animé a iniciar un huerto vertical de tomates empleando materiales de reciclaje. A continuación comparto con ustedes un resumen de los pasos realizados y sus respectivas imágenes.
I'll tell you that I didn't use certified seeds, the nurseries closest to my house are closed because of the quarantine, so I used the seeds of some tomatoes that they had bought to make a salad.
Les comento que no utilicé semillas certificadas, los viveros más cercanos a mi casa se encuentran cerrados por la cuarentena, así que empleé las semillas de unos tomates que habían comprado para hacer una ensalada.
With the help of a small sieve I separated the tomato juice seeds.
Con la ayuda de un pequeño colador separé las semillas de jugo de tomate.
To plant the tomato seeds, I used fertilized soil that I had saved. As a container for germination I used a few cups of a coffee set that is not used very often.
Para plantar las semillas de tomate utilicé tierra abonada que tenía guardada. Como envase para la germinación utilicé unas tazas de un juego de café que no se emplea con mucha frecuencia.
After about 7 days, with the help of some water and enough natural light, the first tomato sprouts began to appear.
Al cabo de unos 7 días, con la ayuda de un poco de agua y suficiente luz natural, comenzaron a aparecer los primeros brotes germinados de tomate.
And after about 20 days the seedlings were big enough to be transplanted into the vertical planter.
Y transcurridos unos 20 días las plantitas ya tenían el tamaño suficiente para ser transplantadas a la jardinera vertical.
For the vertical planter I used plastic recycling materials. I specifically looked for 3 plastic bottles used for soft drinks. I cut the bottom of these bottles with a precision cutter and made two holes in the sides through which I would pass a metal chain that would be used to attach them to a metal tube fixed to the wall.
Para la jardinera vertical utilicé materiales plásticos de reciclaje. Específicamente busqué 3 botellas plásticas de las que usan las bebidas gaseosas o refrescos. A estas botellas las corte por la parte inferior con un exacto y les hice dos orificios a los lados a través de los cuales haría pasar una cadena de metal que serviría para sujetarlos a un tubo de metal fijado a la pared.
I also used some pieces of cloth that would serve to hold the tomato plants once they are placed in an upright position. The pieces of cloth were cut in a proportional size and with a cut in one of its sides.
También utilicé unos trozos de tela que servirían para sostener las plantitas de tomate una vez que estas se coloque en posición vertical. Los trozos de tela fueron cortados en un tamaño proporcional y con un corte en uno de sus lados.
A knife is used to loosen the soil around the container where the tomato plants are planted. With great care the surface of the soil is covered with each of the cut pieces of cloth.
Con la ayuda de un cuchillo se afloja la tierra alrededor del envase donde se encuentran sembradas las plantas de tomate. Con mucho cuidado la superficie de la tierra es cubierta con cada uno de los trozos de tela cortados.
Then we introduce the tomato plant at the bottom of the bottle and we take it out through the spout of the bottle, at all times we avoid that the plant can be damaged by the contact with the surfaces.
Seguidamente introducimos la plantita de tomate por la parte inferior de la botella y la sacamos por el pico de la botella, en todo momento evitamos que la planta se pueda dañar producto del contacto con las superficies.
Once each of the tomato plants has been removed from the hole, we complete the filling of the soda bottle with fertilized soil and place each of the containers that make up the vertical planter in its respective place, with the help of the metal chains.
Una vez que ha sido sacada por el orificio cada una de las plantas de tomate, completamos el llenado de la botella de gaseosa con tierra abonada y colocamos en su respectivo lugar, con la ayuda de las cadenas metálicas, cada uno de los envases que conforman la jardinera vertical.
What remains is to wait for the natural process of growth of the plant to be able to enjoy its fruits. I hope in a future publication to bring you good news about this.
