Every reasonable person has a dream or at least a focus of being an employer of labour – being the owner of an enterprise or a little business at the least. It feels really good to dictate the pace, to be the one to make decisions or to give final approvals to plans and decisions, but to most people, the ladder to this top position starts with being an employee working with other establishments for a period of time, during which experience and managerial skills are acquired to make such a person fit to manage his own establishment in due course. Here are some of the best employee practices needed to build a successful career.
Diligence
Diligence refers to a careful and persistent effort at performing a task. It involves attention to details, proper interpretation of data, prompt delivery of assignments, etc. Job descriptions differ from one company to the other and from one job function to the other, so the levels of commitment may differ. Your level of diligence to work is therefore measured based on the requirements of your job – how often you show up to work, your attitude towards assignments given, how passionate you are about keeping clients happy, and so on. Your level of diligence as an employee will most likely reflect in your business when you own one. It is therefore preferable that you are diligent while working with others.
Creativity/Productivity
Your creative ideas and innovative inputs go a long way in making your workplace better, thereby securing a stronger stand for you and possible promotions. No employer wants someone who just adds to the number. Your employer needs your ideas so that work can be done better than it is normally done, and so that better results can be gotten. When a company needs to lay off some staff, probably due to economic constraints, they first consider those who seem to not be productive or do not have creative ideas.
Punctuality
Punctuality they say, is the soul of business. It is important to always get to your workplace early, get to meetings early and every other appointment you may have. No matter how many beautiful ideas or innovations you have, you might not be able to tender them for consideration if you have the habit of lateness. No one will even want to seek your opinion.
Smart and Neat Physical Appearance
I term this smart and neat because just as job functions differ, dressing differs also. A factory worker for instance may have to put on overalls while a secretary needs a smart corporate wear. No matter your job, neatness is essential. Nobody wants to associate with a dirty or shabbily dressed worker. No client wants to be welcomed by such a person, neither does an employer want such around him. As long as you may want to put on what you think is convenient with you, you need to put the interest of your employer at heart if you are to continue to work with the establishment.
In conclusion, people’s attitudes towards work with their employees are mostly sustained in their businesses too. Your employee-attitude is therefore a reflection of what your business will look like.
