One of the subjects that are most challenging to students, especially young children is Mathematics. It is mostly a fundamental challenge for them. The causes of this dislike for mathematics range from different issues including bad teaching and study techniques, wrong orientation, influence of peers, bad mathematics foundation, etc. No matter your field of endeavour, at least a basic knowledge of mathematics is needed for every individual. A teacher of mine in secondary school would always say back then that even if you intend to be a trader in future, you need to know mathematics well so that you do not make mistakes in calculating money / basic financial transactions. Let’s check out some practices that will help children enjoy learning mathematics.
Parents Should Teach Their Children Mathematics
There is a special kind of connection that a child has when his parents teach him a subject he takes in school. Many parents feel more comfortable teaching children English language, simply because it is a general language for them. They can simply give children essays to write and check it at their convenience. Mathematics can be treated this way too. Help children solve their mathematics assignments and even treat with them more difficult questions than they were taught in class. This gives children a boost in their interest in the study of mathematics and gives a brighter future of mathematics for the child.

As Much as Possible, Use Real-Life Situations to Explain To Them
Although mathematics can be arguably seen as an abstract subject, some of its parts can be explained with real-life situations, like money, physical items, and people. Using real life situations make mathematics more attractive and easy to solve. For example, drawing someone on a cliff and another person on a plain land can be easily used to explain Angles and distances of Elevation and Depression.
Explain Word Problems to Children
Mathematics can be interesting for a child until he starts to tackle word problems. As much as many people understand mathematics, they sometimes find it difficult to interpret those words into figures. This is where some children fall out of love with mathematics and it begins to deepen and get worse until they fall totally out of love with the subject.
A parent’s dislike for mathematics should not rub off on the child(ren). Even if you do not understand mathematics, let it not be obvious to your children so they do not take the same attitude towards it. Helpful materials that aid the study of mathematics should also be bought for children to encourage them study. These are just some of the many practices that help children love mathematics and develop keen interest in it.
