This is progress on a newly developed digital painting that I've been working on! It has been coming along pretty nicely and I can't wait to see where it ends up! Below are some progress images on where the drawing originated!
I started off with a general pencil sketch, which isn't always how I start my images but in this case, I did! I then took a photo of the image and brought it into Procreate where I made the image to have a more mid toned value so that I can begin popping in highlights and darker values to start pushing the forms of the character more!
The next few steps are adding more form defining value as well as finer details to help sell more of a 3D effect as well as start to develop the overall look of the character's skin and costuming! The look of the skin and costume don't always have to be done in this stage but that's how I decided to do this character.
The next three steps are mainly detail refining in all areas of the design as well as more costume pieces to push the pirate look! Sometimes I don't always know what kind of character I am going to be creating because I just start with a general sketch. Sometimes I find it throughout the process. Images start coming to mind that are sometimes influenced by the natural flow of the piece. I love keeping the drawing loose throughout the whole time I am working with each stage. The final stages are yet to come where I will be finishing up costume pieces and possibly adding set pieces and other life forms to accompany the main character as well as, of course, color! I hope this helps anyone out there who possibly struggles with the digital painting transition from traditional media! Please send me feedback and feel free to ask me any questions!
