I'll start off by saying that I'm not a huge Stallone fan. He's not a bad actor, he's just not my favorite actor. I enjoyed Rocky and Rambo and several of his other pictures. This picture wasn't one I really enjoyed though. Like Stallone himself, it wasn't bad, it just seemed kind of like it fell flat and the acting is typical of Stallone.
I think the best way to describe this movie is Rocky meets The Watchmen meets The Crow. IDK, that's what it reminded me of. The basic plot is about a kid who's searching for a superhero named Samaritan. Like the Watchmen, hero might be a matter of perspective. Regardless, Stallone plays the part of the superhero/antihero Samaritan.
Maybe it was the dystopian backdrop and urban squaller of this film that reminded me of The Crow a little. It felt to me like Stallone was channeling the character of Rocky Balboa. A couple times it felt like I was watching some weird Rocky remake as Stallone made his way through the grungy city.
The character of Samaritan is one of hero or maybe vigilante. The line is very blurry here. That's partially due to the script though. They really don't make it clear what this guy is.
The movie itself wasn't bad IMHO, but it wasn't really good either. Like so many films hitting the market these days, there was nothing special about it. It was something to stare at for 1 hour and 42 minutes. I'm also not the only one to feel this way because the movie only got 5.8 out of 10 stars on iMDB.
It seems with all the content wars of these streaming services, movie quality itself has really plummeted. This movie IMHO falls into that category. Seemed like content for the sake of content. Insert well known actor name here and feed this garbage to the masses. At least that was my take. Garbage might be a bit strong, but there's nothing special here at all. A small plot twist towards the end, nothing more. Hollywood and the movie industry have really beat the dystopian, gangland, vigilante characters into the ground.
If you're a huge Stallone fan you'll probably enjoy it. It's typical Stallone. You might even like Rocky, meets The Watchmen, meets The Crow. It just wasn't for me.
