A latest government report reveals that almost 210 thousand people call subdivided flats their homes in Hong Kong (Source: http://www.info.gov.hk/gia/general/201801/18/P2018011800590.htm). A normal flat, originally fitted with one kitchen and toilet, is reconfigured into a handful or a dozen of subdivided flats. Each subdivided flat is a self-contained mini flat with own kitchen and toilet.
This reconfigured flat has 4 self-contained subdivided flats; each of which can house a family of two or up to five. An average monthly rent is about HKD 8,000 (about USD 1,000 or 733 British pounds).
Tennants are so diverse that some of them are ‘grassroots’ or some are even middle management.
Housing is a deadlock in Hong Kong that hardly disappears overnight. Sad but true, subdivided flats arguably are an antidote that helps people cannot afford to buy or rent a full flat.
