I both love and hate the term 'bio-hacking' - I like it because it's cyber cute, but hate it because it's too cute. J. thinks he's funny when he uses it, like he's some uber cool dude or something (which he's really not). But he's taken it on because he's always been a fan of fasting, and bulletproof coffee is recommended for those limiting their eating. He's been doing a bulletproof for breakfast every day for a week now, making me cringe as I'm making my morning smoothie or porridge with rhubarb.
'Invented' by Dave Asprey, who came across the idea of a fatty, caffeinated morning brew while trekking in Tibet (inspired by coffee with yak butter), and it's spread through the paleo and keto worlds too. It's a keto solution because it's essentially a high fat breakfast, giving you energy during the morning and keeping you feeling full for a long time. Ketones act as the primary fuel source on during states of starvation, when glucose from carbs aren't available. By drinking it, it elevates the ketone levels in the blood and thus gives you energy.
Drinking butter coffee in the morning is meant to make a difference in your appetite if you're fasting, and incorporating some high-quality fats is meant to be good for you, though I was raised in a decade where everyone was trying to cut out all fat. It's meant to boost mood and be anti-inflammatory, improve cognitive function and boost metabolism - however, there's been no comprehensive studies on it as yet. I get the theory on it, but it still makes me uncomfortable - surely you're missing out a whole heap of other nutrients for breakfast? And is all that fat really good for you? This definitely isn't a 'guru' post!
Organic, grass fed butter - this is higher in anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and vitamin K ordinary butter. It contains fat soluble nutrients like A, E and D (good for bone health and a healthy immune system, and K2 for a healthy cardiovascular system.
Coffee - of course. Make it organic and awesome brewed coffee, a no brainer. We use an aeropress to brew ours.
MCT (Coconut Oil) - MCT or medium-chain triglycerides, is a form of saturated fatty acid that has health benefits ranging from increased cognition function to helping manage weight. MCT is a more concentrated form of coconut oil, but we just use coconut oil as we have it to hand anyway.
Check out the D-tube, which runs through J. making one! You simply warm the cup (as you're going to whizz it up, you want the coffee to stay hot as possible) and make your brew. Then, add it to the blender with a tablespoon or so of butter and the same with coconut oil. Give it a quick wizz and pour the foamy mixture into your cup and - voila! A butter coffee, or 'budder' as we say here in Australia.
I wouldn't try it for ages - are you kidding me? Fat in coffee? But it's pleasantly nice - kinda nutty and buttery and coconutty! I liked it, but then, I'm not really drinking coffee at the moment.
J. really likes the taste, and he says it makes him feel full right up to about midday after he has it at 7 am. I guess he can't just eat toast and vegemite every morning.
Have you tried butter coffee? What do you think about it? Would you give it a go or does it make you feel a little sick?
