There was a lot of bad things happening in the United States in the 1950's, despite all the apple pie and white picket fence rhetoric that we remember.
We were in a nuclear arms race with the Soviet Union.
Senator McCarthy was heading up House Committee on Un-American Activities.
And being gay was almost as bad as being a Communist.
Enter Snagglepuss.
Now I know seeing those two words right there would make you think for a second. What does the Hanna Barbera character have to do with a one of the dark times of American History?
Its the focus on the new series from DC called "Exit Stage Left: The Snagglepuss Chronicles". Its a title in which Snagglepuss is reimagined as a southern playwright trying to make his name on Broadway, all the while hiring a woman to play his wife because he is in the closet about his homosexuality.
When you think of Snagglepuss you don't think of a serious story, you think of the wacky hijinks that you grew up watching, but this is a very serious book.
The team of Mark Russell and Mike Feehan use a beloved character to put a mirror up to modern day America to show just how ridiculous things were and how we seem to be heading back in that direction, without actually saying that. The subtle nature in which the book is done is fantastic.
The book is available through DC Comics and should be at your local comic shop today! I would suggest picking it up.
