Why not just ban everything? How can a naturally growing part of of your body be seen as a religious symbol in the same light as a cross or a kippah? Yes, it can show your religious affiliation, but that is besides the point. I mean, who is to decide exactly how long a man may have his beard? I, personally, would like to know what religion someone follows because it can help avoid awkward situations.
A French court has upheld a decision by a Parisian hospital to sack an intern over his refusal to trim his beard, ruling that facial hair in a secular environment might be interpreted by staff and patients as a religious symbol.
